Research and development

Innovation and research have always been the basis for scientific progress. EcoTechSystems, thanks to its scientific training, operates in the field of applied research by means of a multidisciplinary approach. Among the main themes are reported:

Decontamination of marine sediments

Contaminated sediments, such as port dredging mud, despite thepotential contamination by hydrocarbons and heavy metals, can be an asset if properly treated. The development of effective and environmentally friendly methods is an objective and a major challenge for the future, which is faced by EcoTechSystems in the framework of the research project ULIXES (Mediterranean Sea unraveling and Exploiting microbial diversity and ecology for Xenobiotics pollutants and clean up), funded by the European Community under the 7 th Framework Programme.

This project, through applied research on processes regulating the microbial degradation of hydrocarbons and the mobilization/immobilization of heavy metals, is aimed at the development of new treatment protocols and environmentally friendly biotechnologies for the recovery of contaminated marine sediments. A more detailed description of the project, the Operative Units involved and progresses is available on the official website of the project.

Design of transplant activities of Posidonia oceanica

The installation of pipelines or other infrastructure in coastal areas can result in the need of transplanting Posidonia oceanica or other seagrasses. The research activities of EcoTechSystems in this field is aimed at developing new methodologies for the implementation and the improvement of transplantation techniques, for the maximization of the efficiency of the transplantation activities and, at the same time, lowering the environmental impact of operations.

Study and test of antifouling products

EcoTechSystems performs studies devoted to the assessment of the ecocompatibility of antifouling products (eg, Cl compounds) through biological, ecotoxicological and ecological indicators. EcoTechSystems designs in-situ experiments for the evaluation of the efficiency of antifouling treatments, based on the analysis of micro-and macrofouling on artificial substrates, and performs microscopic analysis and molecular taxonomic identification of micro-organisms and macrofouling.
